NEW COAL FIRED ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT PROPOSED IN SURRY COUNTY Please voice your concern about the coal-fired electric generating plant being proposed in Surry county. Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, based in Richmond, is proposing to build a $6 billion dollar coal-fired power plant on 1,600 acres in the town of Dendron in Surry County . It would be two and a half times the size of the coal-fired plant currently being constructed in Wise County, VA. Data provided for the Wise County facility reveals that it would produce over 5 million tons of CO2/year, 12,500 tons of nitrogen oxide/year and over 3,000 tons of sulfur dioxide/year, along with a significant quantity of mercury - which is expected to contaminate local ground water. The Surry plant will produce two and a half times these amounts of pollutants for our environment. ODEC is claiming that the plant will use "clean coal technology" however this technology is unproven, is by some estimates 20 years away from being operational, and is expected to cost $100 million/year, which will be added on to the cost of your electricity.
