The Low Carbon Diet
The primary cause of global
warming is carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere
through the burning of fossil fuels - gasoline,
coal, oil and natural gas - which we use to power
our cars and homes and produce the goods we consume.
Starting in March of 2008 our members participated
in David Gershon's Low Carbon Diet Program
Diet - A 30 day Program to lose 5000 Pounds.
The program helped individuals better understand
their contribution to global warming and motivated
them to take action to reduce their carbon footprints.
This program helped to answer many questions individuals
had on how to take personal action in the fight
against global warming. Questions such as Where
do I begin? Which are the important actions to
take? How do I take them? And if I do take them,
will they really make a difference given the magnitude
of the problem. The program is also intended to
be expanded into our communities and be a force
for conservation and social change. We tailored
our program to span the course of five regular
general membership meetings.
By following this program and implementing such
changes as installing a tank less water heater,
reducing solid waste production, and switching
to more fuel efficient vehicles, the group was
able to reduce their CO2 emissions by 167,877
pounds!

Williamsburg Town Hall
On September 24, 2007 WCAN
(Williamsburg Climate Action Network) hosted the
first in a series of CCAN events supporting the
message of - No New Coal in Virginia! Invest
in clean energy! The event was held on the
campus of William and Mary and was attended by
students, professors, and people in the community
interested in learning how coal impacts their
local environment.
Eric Blevins from Mountain Justice Summer presented
a shocking slide show on mountaintop removal of
coal and how it is devastating communities in
Southwestern Virginia, particularly Wise County,
Virginia. Mike Tidwell talked about how coal is
affecting climate change and the need for tougher
legislative action NOW to shift to renewable energy
sources. Mike Town of the Sierra club presented
the Citizen’s energy plan. The plan explains the
impacts of the state’s current energy use, presents
alternatives with the most potential for Virginia,
and details what to include in a sustainable energy
plan.
Everyone at the event walked away with several
messages - Virginia’s plan to build more coal-fired
power plants will accelerate global warming, mountain
top removal mining is an ecologically ruinous
process, and the construction of the Dominion
transmission line is just an extension cord to
cheap, dirty coal! This was a great start to a
campaign to end our dependence on fossil fuels
and switch to a more sustainable environment for
the generations to come!
